How far in advance purchased?

Wondering how far in advance you purchased your one-ways. Recently Mr. hamburger went to Maine to deliver a boat back down to Florida. I bought him a one-way up a few days out - he got the SSSS. Due to sailing delays, he had to jump ship in Virginia and fly back - walkup one way + SSSS. He flew two different (non-CO) carriers. So - hmmm. Maybe my husband and the trucking guy have something in common that you don't? Dark hair and bushy eyebrows? Foreign accent? (He's French but poorly traveled folks cannot tell difference.)
