If a thread has 6 new posts when I look, I'll have got maybe 1 mail for them. Some none at all, and some 100% fine.

What you describe is
almost the way I thought it is supposed to work. Only one email for all posts on one topic until actually logging on to FT again. Last week I was getting almost no notifications at all. It seems to have drastically improved.
