Everything worked, however when I plugged in the IPOD, it said it had to be formatted. ok. Did that, and plugged it in again. Itunes didn't recognize it, nor did my windows computer see the new USB device. Two hours later, I gave up, removed Itunes from my computer, rebooted and reinstalled. Finally my new IPOD was recoginized by both Itunes and my computer.

I have no idea if my experience was normal, however if it is, one has to wonder if anyone tested the upgrade path from older IPODs to newer ones to see if there was an issue!

At least it's done! Lost a day, but now I can carry all of my music, all of my pictures and all of my backup files on my travels!
Generally, as a rule for Apple products, try the simplest path first. It will usually work. Simplest path in this case would be "take it out of the box, and plug the thing into the computer". You may find that you need to update some drivers on your machine, or that you need to upgrade/reformat/whatever the device itself, but chances are that you'll have the best results by employing the most direct route. Not sure if it would have worked in your case, but maybe something for the back pocket when using Apple stuff in the future.

This can be a change in the way Windows users are used to operating. --and, in fact, when connecting an iPod to a Wintel machine, it probably doesn't apply quite so much. But I would make it the baseline path nonetheless.

Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here. I'm dying to see how those do hooked up to a a TV displaying a slideshow with music.
