There is a dark side to auto upgrades. Right now, we control getting a upgrade by calling, sometimes many times, and, theoretically, if we are the first to call and a seat is available, we get it.With Auto upgrades, the airline controls who gets it. For instance, who is to say, that an airline will decided to base its autoupgrade policy on who has spent the most money with it the last year. Thus, one would never know he/she lost out on an upgrade because another elite, not even necessarily one of an equal or higher level, got the upgrade based on some unpublished formula. I know it sounds Orwellian, but it could happen.
