You know, FRA might also work if need be. However, I suspect that if we did this, my mother could still not upgrade since I would not be flying with her. Am I correct??

I guess you can buy two tickets, one for you and one for her, upgrade at time of booking, then find someone SE or E flying on the same flight and aske them if they could help. Your ticket can be refunded if bought in Y. Just a suggestion, not sure whether it would work
