Also, I did manage to get good seats from ATL to JFK before I called up. The agent said that because I changed seats before my paper tickets were issued, there would be problems with paper tickets issue. Is this a bunch of crap or some merit in this?

Generally on most jet domestic/international DL flights the seats with more seat pitch begin after first/business, through the first five rows in coach. They generally have a seat pitch of 34” – 36” (these seats are usually reserved for Medallion and full fare coach paying customers) compared to the rest of coach at 31” – 32”, its will help if you are a frequent flyer for example elite level, or if your ticket is a full fare economy in YB, M class of service. The best advice is to check-in early at ATL if all fails ask again at the gate in JFK and Paris CDG. In my experiences phone delta randomly and speak to different agents, some are more helpful and experienced than others.
