Qualifications required to be a FA

I have a three page letter dated October 6, 1954 from Trans Canada Airlines regarding qualifications required for employment as a stewardess (not addressed to me ). Here are some of the highlights….

Qualifications:

1. Applicant shall be a Canadian Citizen or a non Canadian legally domiciled in Canada
2. Applicant shall be a graduate nurse who has completed her RN examinations….. Continuous employment is contingent upon her remaining a RN in good standing
3. Applicant shall not be over 26 years of age nor under 21. Height 60 to 68 inches and weight between 100 and 130 pounds inclusive
4. Applicant must be single (a widow will be considered single)
5. Applicant shall be required to pass a physical examination by a company doctor
6. Applicant must be able to read, write and converse fluently in English

Five weeks training in Montreal…
Salary during training $150 month plus $3.50 to defray expenses of a personal nature…

Starting salary per month

First six months $234.50
Second six months $246.50
Third six months $252.50
Fourth six months $258.50
Third year $282.00…
Seventh year $339.00

You are a hostess in the sky responsible for the comfort and welfare of passengers…

Irregular working hours
Fly an average of 85 hours per month..

TCA will pay half the cost of the uniform.....

One day vacation for each month worked

Free pass after one year to Boston, NY, Cleveland, Chicago, Seattle….
Free pass after two years to Europe, Nassau or Jamaica…

Enclose a recent photograph..

A letter from your doctor certifying the condition of your health and vision….
