What happens to an e-ticket when res is cancelled?

I was booked with paper tickets ZRH-FRA-YYZ. When I went to check in at ZRH, there was no record of me in their system . On my flight over through MUC, the inbound AC was delayed due to mechanical problems and I was re-booked on a later flight. The problem is, somebody forgot to tell AC and they treated me as a "no show" for segment 2 and hence cancelled the return portion of my itinerary.

Fortunately I was able to produce a boarding pass showing I had taken the 2nd flight and had the paper ticket to prove I was supposed to be on the flgiht. I only shudder to think what would have happened if this had been an e-ticket itinerary where I may or may not have brought a copy of the itinerary with me!
