I was informed that this was not enough to get the refund processed, that I had to verbally request the refund and that the refund could take up to two months. Is it normal that AA requires a separate phone call to generate these refunds? In those cases in which a refund is requested on a refundable ticket, does AA make the customer its banker for two months?

I have to mention that in my experience, CO processes refund requests on refundable tickets in two days, a week at most.
What the heck kind of question is this??? An individual demanding a certain level of competence and performance from a corporation (like they expect from their customers??)....wrong decade my friend.
