But here's a further question re that routing. Buying a joint UA-PAL ticket will cost me over $1400. But if I buy them separately, the total comes to just over $1100. That's $300 I can spend on something else. But what happens if I buy two separate tickets, and UA gets me in so late I miss the connection? On the way there the time in HKG is a bit over 3 hours, on the way back it's 1:45. Any advice on whether purchasing the tickets separately is an inappropriate risk or not? I'm a cheapskate.
Thanks.
If you buy two separate tickets and miss your connection to MNL, UA is not obligated to put you on another flight. UA's condition of contract is to get you to HKG--unless you buy a through fare. In June 2004, I bought two separate tickets to fly to BCN (IAD-LHR on UA and LHR-BCN on BA). I ended up spending over $400 for a one-way fare from LHR-BCN when I missed my connection at LHR.
BTW, are you certain that UA and PR have a ticketing agreement? In 2000, I booked two separate tickets since they did not have ticketing agreement at that time.
