It was a familiar experience for the two million Britons who flew off for an Easter break this weekend - hour-long queues at airports, wrestling with heavy bags and interminable delays in the departure lounge.
But these days will soon be over. Airlines are introducing the ultimate in efficiency - the self-service airport.
The contract to install the machines at Gatwick has not yet been let and as yet almost all the airlines have yet to sign up to the scheme, which will involve integrating their computer software with the check in machines.
It will be interesting to see how many airlines take it up.
One would assume that the cost of using the machines will be offset by a reduction in check in desks required and corresponding staff.
There is a pressure on the number of check in desks at Gatwick so this may help.
