But here's a further question re that routing. Buying a joint UA-PAL ticket will cost me over $1400. But if I buy them separately, the total comes to just over $1100. That's $300 I can spend on something else. But what happens if I buy two separate tickets, and UA gets me in so late I miss the connection? On the way there the time in HKG is a bit over 3 hours, on the way back it's 1:45. Any advice on whether purchasing the tickets separately is an inappropriate risk or not? I'm a cheapskate.

i have done (and will do) the similar deal from iad to mia to south america

when i boarded at iad i gave them both sets of tickets, they can route my baggage all the way thru (assuming the airlines have the interline agreement)
and if the airline is a partner, they can check you in all the way thru,
although once they were not able to get me a seat
