I had the same problem every time I stay in a major chain hotel in France. The last time was in Le Meridien Nice. When I asked why they are doing that, the front manager told me that was the banking system they use, and he couldn't bill me in Euros, but only in my local currency (Swiss francs). That kind of practice cost me every time an average 2-3 % "hidden tax" on the inital price of the stay... That's not very fair play . So, if you can, pay cash, and you won't have any "hidden tax" .
