AA Customer service can link the two reservations on their system - so you can request upgrades using stickers/upgrade coupons. You can request that the upgrades be "all or none" or any available - in which case you may be in front and the kiddies/spouse in the back.

For the sake of harmony and peace in my household, when I request upgrades with my spouse, it's "all or none".

We have two teens and in the past we've upgraded them to F for the experience - while my spouse and I sat in the back (the kids used our F boarding passes.)
