Take a look at http://www.ams.nl/. That group has a few nice, low-key hotels... nothing too fancy but they're fine. I passed the Ramada Concert Hall location, and it looked a bit better than the Concert Inn next door. That area near the museums is very well situated and one can walk or take a tram with no problems. Amsterdam is really a small, terrific city for walking.

The double beds *have* all disappeared.. we found the same problem. I'd imagine that some of the more luxurious hotels like the Pulitzer may be more inviting. A Dutch friend of mine used to stay there.
