You can get a normal Amex and collect Membership Rewards points (1 per pound) that can be converted to many non-OneWorld mileage schemes, plus Hilton, Starwood, PC and a few other hotel plans. The only real benefit is that it gives you a points bank you can use to top off an award from a number of schemes you may be collecting directly.

For UK residents, the main airline use of MR points is the 1 to 1 into BMI. You can also transfer into PC at a far better rate than PC's official Visa card - 2 points per pound spent.
