I'm absolutely positively sure the GA would have given you vouchers, since you preferred them over the round trip ticket, had you said you would volunteer only if you got vouchers. He might hazve gven you other perks too, such as room and meals.
Also not having a seat assignment makes no difference (?) when it comes to volunteering.
