Getting Quality Tourist Time

I have the good fortune to be able to bring my wife along on most of my business trips (mostly SFO to NRT, SIN, PVG, TPE, MUC, and CDG). I'll work for several days, and she'll head out as a tourist, checking out the local sights and attractions. Then we'll take the weekend and visit the two/three/four places she thinks I'd like to see.

This lets her be a "tour guide" and share the benefit of her exploring, and it means I get an efficient day or two of visiting after working for a few days. We just keep expanding our familiarity with these cities, staying (if we can) in different areas on each successive trip.

It's worked out well for a couple of years now. And my wife made UA 1K this year for the first time, all of it as leisure travel with me.

We think of it as doing the travel that some of our peers plan to be doing when they retire in a decade or two, but we get to do it now while my airfare, the hotel, and most of my meals are on expense accounts. They're not generous expense accounts, but we couldn't afford to do this on our own.

Since I know it could all go away tomorrow, since travel could get more difficult in the future, and since we still have most of our health, we consider ourselves fortunate, and we're very grateful we have the chance to avail ourselves of the travel opportunity.
