Upgrading a "bulk" ticket

Am about to embark on a ten day trip via CO and cruise ship. Flying PHX-IAH-ACA, boarding a ship and returning HNL-PHX.

I called CO and, as a gold member, was instantly upgraded on the flights to ACA (which surprised me). When I inquired about the return flight from HNL it sounded as if I should use miles to upgrade that segment.

CO last asked me for the fare basis code (Y8) and the dollars paid. As I did not have the ticket in hand I couldn't provide that info.

The ticket is written as a "bulk" fare which I suspect is considered non-upgradeable under any circumstances.

I've used the CO ticket office in HNL at the Ala Moana Center before and the staff has been very accomodating.

Should I blow off trying to use miles to upgrade and pay the $100-$150 upgrade if the CO agents at the ticket office will allow?

Anyone else ever found themselves facing a situation like this??

PS......last air ticket provided by a cruise line (via AA and CO) I had no problem upgrading paying AA for stickers and CO by virtue of elite status
