b) yes, a departure city would help. if you're flying from a gateway, you'll have a lot of flexibilty in terms of low fare options, but if you have to fly from a market not served by asian airlines, then you might be stuck with ua, nw, or co.

c) i wasn't trying to suggest that the op was challenged insofar as internet use was concerned, but that travel agents do a much better job at finding good tpac fares than orbitz, expedia et al.
moondog-
no offense taken...i posted in a hurry, so didn't think about incl. other info. i'm from the ny area, so ewr, lga, jfk, and phl are all convenient. i rarely use a travel agent, since i book everything online (contrary to christep's comment), so i'm not familiar w/ the benefits of using one, but i'll certainly try an agent. thanks for your input.
btw, i've been searching for fares for the dates (7/30 or 7/31 - 8/19 or 8/20), and the lowest fares i've found are approx. $955 (not incl. taxes, etc.) on ua.

christep-
you might want to be a little less presumptuous in labeling someone as having "zero knowledge or ability" in using the web...though i admit to being completely new and inexperienced w/r/t this board. btw, i was born in hk, and my family is from hk - so when mom says it's peak, i trust her...and moms are always right?!
