You're right, bocaEXP, the whole bit about "we're primarily here for your safety" is just a cop out. I mean, really, do they expect us to believe that we're somehow safer because the FAs have extra time to read and/or chat in the galley rather than provide service to their customers?!?!

It's no surprise to me that the FAs who actually seem to enjoy their jobs the most are the ones who provide the best service. Maybe that's because they do more than sit and read or chat with other like-minded FAs all day. They actually get to get up off of their rear ends and interact with their customers. Were I a FA, it would drive me batty to just do as little as possible every flight, day after day. I'd rather be roaming the aisles than strapped in a seat for hours on end - F class or not!
