There are three levels of BA Amex cards.

The Premium Plus is the one to get (with the £120 fee reduced to £30 by getting a free Amex (non-BA) Blue). If you have only the basic BA Amex, you're better off using your tesco visa but you really should get an upgrade to PP.
You're right on the visa points - it's when you convert to BA miles the PP is the better bet.
