Important to note, that you're entitled to an involuntary refund in the event of a schedule change. So the airline usually works with you to come up with something reasonable. If they don't, you can always get your money back, even on a non-refundable ticket.

btw, in one case, NW totally whacked a schedule of mine, and we couldn't come up with something close, so I simply asked for an involuntary refund. The agent told me, "Oh good, that's much easier than rebooking."
