This way as soon as a B seat becomes available you can snap it and you should be OK with the upgrade - the LAX flight looks indeed like a pretty big risk...

Also to get to the front of the DM list, would UA allow you to check-in in SYD 24 hrs before the flight? I guess if you don't have luggage to check-in that should be pretty easy? And even if you do you should still be able to check-in your luggage on the day before you board... has anybody done this before from SYD ?
If I fly to SFO I have to waitlist for flights out of there and I need to be in MSP on Monday morning first thing. I already called and asked. I guess I could insist. SFO flight is also likely to be full in C & F according to the agent.

I've never tried going to the airport the day before. Problem will be that check-in closes before the 4:20 departure time, so not sure there would be anyone there to physically do the checkin for tomorrow. Pity on-line checkin doesn't work for international flights.

Oh well.....I just need to make sure and remember the sleeping pills. Anyone on UA840 on 3/20, ignore the guy snoring in 39H.
