Don't cancel the card immediately. There is about a 30-day lag from the close of your last statement cycle to the time points post, in my experience.
One idea: if you have any Delta, Continental, or US Airways miles lying around, you can transfer MR points to these accounts and possibly have enough for a free ticket. The points transfer almost instantaneously if you do it online.
