We have both been to SF and if I remember correctly the W is not exactly in a great location for seeing the city on foot, but we would overlook that if the hotel itself is much nicer.
Another note is that we will have a car. Any parking recommedations would be welcomed.
I live here and have eaten at all of the (although not slept at them). If I were coming from out of town and I did not want the W scene, I would stay at the Palace. The location is great, the hotel is beautiful and you would be a quick bus, BART, or MUNI ride from anything you would want. Plus you would be walking distance to the Ferry Building (and anything you would want to eat) and the Embarcadero and the bay for strolling.
Have a good time no matter what you decide (although I must warn you that it is supposed to rain this weekend).
