As an American living and working abroad for over 15 years I have a deep understanding and respect for your sincere question.

The truth is that yes, this is not a high point for the image of Americans abroad. The reason is evident in the hostile reaction of our fellow countryman even to you asking the question. The United States used to be a beacon of freedom and openness and it is not only American Citizens that are disappointed in the activities of the current administration.

We are put on the front lines everyday and often put into uncomfortable positions. Amazing how the most positive sympathy I ever felt following the September 11th attaks was so simply squandered.

That said, do not forget that Italy is one of the most political divided countries in Europe and their conservative leader is more hated by his left wing than any liberal could ever dislike Bush.

This journalist worked for a communist newspaper that is very critical of the Italian government. That means that about 20% or so of Italians probably strongly believe her story with most falling in the middle. Italy has three communist parties and even they rarely agree. This 30% of left wingers already have a general distaste for America and Americans anyway.

The fact is that the Italian economy is in dire need of tourists and they are very happy you are coming and spending your money.

Italians are very familiar with not being able to fully support their governments actions. It is sad that many of us that do not support our governments actions are not shown the same respect sometimes.
