We had a very unpleasant experience on 3/11 while trying to use a Gold Upgrade Certificate.

I had purchased a ticket for my girlfriend and called ahead to arrange for her to use one of my upgrade coupons. Her upgrade was confirmed at that time.

We checked in online and the boarding pass image came back with text printed through the middle that said something like:

There is a problem with your itinerary, please see a Customer Service Agent.

So I thought - no problem, when we get to the gate the agent will see the message and be sure to collect the coupon.

Nope. It seems that even though the image looks like a boarding pass (barcode and all) it is not a valid document for passing security. You have to give your coupon to the agent at the ticket counter.

No more online check-in if you are using an upgrade coupon.

This was a major hassle as we had to step out of the front of the security line, return to the ticket counter, get the boarding pass, and then go back through security.
