We flew to Maui for my birthday in February, soon after only BoB food was offered. We brought a small soft-side cooler bag; it fit within another carry-on. When dinner time arrived, we placed cloth placemats on our tray tables (we were seated in the emergency exit row) and then began our own meal service. We began with a serving of mixed nuts (no peanuts). We packed fresh croissants from Le Madeline, sliced turkey breast, provolone cheese, sliced avocado, and sliced tomato and assembled sandwiches. Dinner was completed by splitting a huge slice of Sacher torte. We also had Laughing Cow cheese and crackers for our snack. Since you are supposed to declare food products brought into Hawaii, we made certain to eat everything we had brought with us prior to landing. We used our cooler bag in Maui to transport food for picnics and to transport frozen food from the grocery store to our condo (about a thirty minute drive for us).

We did get some envious looks from the passengers who bought the snack packs and wraps. One FA was amused by our place mats but agreed that it was a good idea because of the questionable cleanliness of the tray tables.
