That late afternoon LGA flight always seems to be a tough upgrade. Rarely did I ever seem to get it in my several years of being gold.

I too agree that those who paid more deserve the upgrade all other things being equal. I am under a very tight travel budget at work so I need to be pretty creative and diligent with my travel. God bless those who can still charge full fares through to their clients!
