I don't understand them

I called back to CO yesterday-if we changed the routing through MSP there were 2 biz seats as far as NRT. I'm willing to use the extra miles just to put hubby in biz part of the way but they can't book it if the whole trip SIN isn't all the same class of service. Coming back he'd still be in coach. Is my only recourse to call them every day? I called NW and they tell me these flights are not vey full so it's not that they have sold the seats-there are plenty. They'd rather have them go empty. If I ask on the plane to the chief purser, do you think they'd bring my husband up front with me as an onboard upgrade? Do the flight attendants ahve that authority? Who does? Check-in agent? Gate agent? Lounge people?

What are the odds of NW allowing my husband into the lounge with me? I have the biz seat, he has coach. Will they let me bring him in as a guest? Should I just walk in and show them only my ticket? Are the people working the desk in the lounge very nice?
