I did JFK-LAX and LAX-JFK earlier this month, booked about a month before. The used 2 CR-1's at the time of booking and upgrades cleared instantly.

I also have LAX-JFK in early April. I booked in late January and used a CR-1 at the time of booking. Again, the upgrade cleared instantly.

Maybe I have just been lucky.
