For folks flying intra-Canada, I know that this is cold comfort. And I don't expect that it will get much better, due to domestic market considerations (or increasingly, LACK thereof, ie Jetsgo!!).

You're one of the few Americans who would book an award ticket to Canada so it is quite likely US and UA, and other American carriers, will have more award seats unused on their transborder flights, than AC would. Most AE members will be using their awards to go south and AC is their first choice airline, thus making seats go quickly.
