In this article you will, IMO, see that the end is near for real FF programs as the mileage points collected dwarf just about every airline's ability to provide reward seats. The graphic with the article shows that there are over 50 million "unsold" seats in FF accounts as of Dec.2004
With Aeroplan, AC will, again IMO, spin it off slowly but surely and eventually divorce itself from it and will eventually start a pure FF program or have none at all.
The data base that is Aeroplan and people's craving to collect points now makes it a potential on line retail giant selling/rewarding toasters, with airline seats becoming a secondary revenue stream.
