As LH still operates SFO-FRA with old-stlye C class seats, go for United! The last time I took UA on this route (connecting from SYD), they had a nice 777 with C+ seating.

Or even better, fly SFO-MUC on LH and connect from there - definitely the best option, with new C seats (beds) and wireless FlyNet broadband internet access. Most of the time, food and inflight service also tend to be better on LH than on UA (in C class).
