7th and Ave B is what some might call
gritty.
Other than that, here we go again with 2005 info for ALadyNCal.
The lower east side is still the way NY once was. This location is on the fringe.
Five years ago I would have told you
not to stay here. Ave. A is where many happening shops and restaurants are located. I couldn't have said that 5 years ago. Ave. B still has bodegas; but they're mixed in with some 'hip' type restaurants/stores.
ST. Marks Place (8th street) has lots of 'college' type stores.
The subway is on 14th street and 1st Ave. You go from Ave B, Ave A, 1st Ave, 2nd. Ave, 3rd Ave. There's a Green Market 3 or 4 days a week at Union Square (14th street area by Park Ave South).
A Flyertalk favorite is
Veselka on 2nd Ave and East 9th Street. The Second Ave Deli is a block away. Already turned the conversation to food.
I wouldn't call Ave B and 7th street cool yet.
As for the upper eastside, lots of upscale stores and restaurants.
1st Ave and 87th Street is slightly remote; but still has access to everything.
The 86th Street crosstown bus will deposit you at the lexington Ave subway (4,5,6 train). Buy a Metro card and it's a free transfer.
