East Village vs. Upper East Side?

Last April, we visited NYC for the first time (5 nights). Thanks to Priceline, we had a reservation at the Stanhope on the Upper East Side (which is sadly closing).

We loved the neighborhood feel. We like to visit Times Square but wouldn't want to be staying in the heart of it.

We are returning to NYC again in May for 4 nights. I had envisioned maybe Central Park South or the Upper East Side, but I think it's going to be more expensive than I expected.

As an alternative, I was looking into vacation apartment rentals. (I know the Hyatt @ Jersey City is also a back up plan).

One studio apt that is available for my dates is in the East Village for a good price.

I know we saw almost everywhere last year when we visited, but I'm not certain we hit the East Village.

How does it compare with the UES? Would it be a good place for our second visit? Is it just another cool neighborhood? BTW, the studio is at 7th & B.

They also have a studio at 87th & 1st, but since the East Village property is less expensive, I wanted to at least consider it.

And, yes, I know a studio is going to be TINY.

Thanks for any advice.
