Firstly I agree - i would rather poke my left eye out than connect in SYD. SIN is always an option but I hate that SIN-MEL sector as it is not long enough to sleep. I always prefer HKG-MEL (or NRT-MEL) as the flight length allows a decent sleep, given the early morning arrival.
I could do the QF302/QF2 (as it does not require an int-domestic connection in SYD - only problem with that is that the extra SYD-MEL sector would put me over the sector limit for SWP (hence why QF2 all the way was ideal).
I just don't get why that day and that flight zeroed out D. J8 C5 clearly shows there are seats in business class.....
