As for Chicago on the 17th/18th, the National Housewares Show starts on the 20th. This show usually draws around 60K attendee's and many are probably getting in early to spend a weekend in Chicago.
According to Travelaxe, Vegas is playing host to the CON/AGG convention that weekend, which has 135K visitors. From lasvegas.com:

CONEXPO-CON/AGG, Mar. 15-19

CONEXPO-CON/AGG (the CON/AGG part is short for the very sexy twins of construction, "concrete and aggregates") is expected to be the world's largest international gathering place for the construction and construction materials industries, showcasing the latest equipment, services, and technologies. This group figures, "If you build it, they will come."
With 2,300 exhibitors covering more than 1.85 million-sq.-ft. of exhibit space, CONEXPO-CON/AGG will draw more than 100,000 industry pros from more than 120 countries.

This massive event is perfect for those in the industry who are looking for new ideas and products, face-to-face meetings with suppliers, education and training, and networking.

The show takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

So that would probably explain why flights to LAS suck. I couldnt find any information for MSN, but I'm guessing UW is having their spring break around that time.
