AA no longer flies nonstop from JFK to Long Beach; you have to connect at DFW. These flights will be on 757s and MD80s, on which the F seats have far less legroom than the J seats on the 767s from JFK to LAX. The meals on NYC-DFW and DFW-LGB won't be as elaborate, either; many of these flights are catered for a hot "snack" service only in F.
Plus, if you're going to LA proper, LAX is much more convenient than LGB...traffic on the 405 from Long Beach to LAX is awful even by California standards much of the day.
