I would stay in the center and either use the airport bus which drops you off close to some nice hotels or take a cab.

I have only been to Madrid once and really liked the Park Hyatt, granted we had a four day free stay, but it was nice to be in town.

There are some sol melia properties nearby too. I really that hotel chain.
