One day I checked, one leg was business and the other first, another departure (different stopover, but origin and destination the same) had one leg in business and the other leg in economy. Both all AA metal.
What a royal pain.
I don't know if this applies to AS awards as well, but with mixed cabin airline revenue fares (where you are booked on a single biz class/PE fare component), the longer leg is always in the higher class cabin.
