Even when I am not in a position to want to change, I often check for the grins and giggles of what convoluted routings are available. And they are still there, but I suspect that load factors can be a challenge. The weird routings come up more often for me on midweek or Saturday flights. So if you're going to SDC at a connection point, try to pick a day that is typically lighter loads.
