I am familiar with the American Express products: With the Delta and Hilton and Starwood cards, once your billing statement arrives, the points are already available for use. For the AMEX Membership Rewards cards, the points 'pend' until the next month, and the points are then available if you have paid your bill. Which way do the various VISA/MC cards work?
