I've flown D1 on their worst products (757, 767, and A330-200/-300). So, I do prefer the CX A350 and 777 over that. But, I think the biggest difference is the lounges. I've used the CX lounge in SFO which is fine and a few of the J lounges in HKG which are some of my favorites in my limited travels. I prefer them slightly to the VS Clubhouse at LHR. I see your point. I live on the west coast and I will make the one to 1.5 hour drive to SFO for a long haul flight. I've flown VS to LHR and CX to HKG. I find it fun to try the non-US carriers.

I do wish DL success going to HKG since if anything it would help depress fares a little bit. It's going to be tough with expensive fuel though.
