I suppose the average Delta flyer is less obsessed with optimizing logistics from a comfort standpoint than I am. When I was younger, I has happy to do all sorts of crazy itineraries, even a few mileage runs, but over time I've learned that by body is far happier upon arrival if I reward it with the most convenient possible connections. Even the simple midcon v tcon variable can mean the difference between 1 v 2 days of jetlag.
