I would say that AS's challeng is entirely of its own making: By failing to maintain a consistent schedule, it chased much of its customer base into UA's open arms. The failure to offer a premium product to NYC was also a serious competitive disadvantage. Now it doesn't offer enough flights or destinations to maintain a critical mass at SFO and the downward spiral has accelerated past the point of recovery.

They're pretty strong in SAN and seem content to continue playing small-ball.
