Much of premium travel doesn't serve a purpose in and of itself but the overall experience can be a part of what a customer wants.
To me, this is how small things - menus, hand towels (and back in the day newspapers etc) and such - make up a large part of premium travel.
I always thought for all its faults BA CE looked classier with these antimacassars, over other European airlines.
