YES exit row extra legroom seats DO get assigned to group 1 (based on my flight today). This is a recent change BACK to the original introductory policy of group 1.
After the first few weeks of the assigned seating implementation, exit row ELRs were switched to group 2 boarding and this policy remained intact until at least April 11, my most recent flight in the exit row ELR seats.
For what it's worth I always book at the basic fare or fare+points. Never have had a problem with overhead bin space at the exit rows.
And I paid 5k points for my short one-way flight today (+$43 ELR seat). If booked today, the cheapest walk-up fare is $360 or 23,500 points. PLUS a $48 seat fare for a one-way one hour in the air flight. This is the new, improved Southwest.
