He needs to call the Res number, enter his CL number and get put through to the Premium Desk and ask them about finding some availability on the flight desired. They can then submit a request to the inventory control folks, including the fact that the request has come from a CL member. No guarantees, but worth the phone call. If he won't come to the party, threaten to elope
